The field of Speech Language Pathology deals with problems in communication as well as feeding and swallowing difficulties in paediatric and adult patients who have developmental and acquired conditions. Currently a Master’s degree in Speech Language Pathology is limited to only one private University in the Kingdom. This situation can be considered as an opportunity for Alfaisal University to establish a new graduate program under the College of Medicine, similar to international universities where speech language pathology programs are run under the umbrella of either schools of Medicine, Health or Behavioural sciences.
A Speech Language Pathologist (SLP) is an allied health professional who works to “identify, help prevent, assess, diagnose, and treat a wide range of disorders affecting speech, language, social communication, cognitive-communication, and swallowing in children and adults”. According to the American Speech and Hearing Association (ASHA), SLPs “work with the full range of human communication and swallowing disorders in individuals of all ages from new-born to the elderly. Having Speech Language Pathologists in a developing country is of primary importance since whereas swallowing is vital to sustain an individual’s life, language is the mental and spiritual means by which one can connect and communicate with others. Therefore, there is a need to develop professionals who have the skills and knowledge to tackle these disorders, and in addition carry out cultural and linguistically valid research in order to develop Saudi Arabian normative data as well as valid and reliable assessment and therapy protocols.
Vision and Mission
The Master of Clinical Speech Language Pathology program at Alfaisal University and KFSH&RC-Riyadh will be a centre of excellence of international standards, committed to professional education, and basic and translational research in speech language pathology.
The Clinical speech language pathology (MSP) master program prepares students to become future leaders and educators with excellence in clinical practice. The ultimate goal is to enable graduates to use their acquired knowledge and skills to participate effectively in preventing, evaluating and treating speech, language and swallowing disorders. In addition, to contribute in research, locally and internationally, to increase the effectiveness of evidence based practice. As well as receive their license to practice based on the requirements of the Saudi Commission for Health Specialties (SCFHS).
On successful completion of the program, students may seek employment in inpatient and outpatient jobs such as Speech Language Pathologists (sometimes called speech therapists).
